A stye (medical name: hordeolum) on the upper eyelid, the result of bacterial infection in a gland at the base of an eyelash hair. The hardened gland develops a pus-filled cyst at its centre, with inflammation & swelling across the whole eyelid. Styes are treated by bathing in warm water or removal of the eyelash involved.
