Lung disorder. Coloured axial (horizontal) CT (computed tomography) scan through the chest of a patient with advanced bronchiectasis. This is the dilation (dark blue) of the bronchioles, the lung airways. The front of the body is at top. The two lungs (red) lie either side of the heart and its blood vessels (pink, centre). The spine (brown, lower centre) is also seen. There are many causes of this condition, which can arise from infection or be a congenital condition (present from birth). It results in persistent coughing that produces sputum. Treatments range from antibiotics to the use of inhaled steroids and surgical drainage.
