A bunion on a woman's right foot. A bunion is a swelling of the joint between the great toe (hallux) and the first metatarsal bone. Bunions are frequently caused by the wearing of ill- fitting shoes. Severe cases may lead to the formation of a bursa, a small sac of fibrous tissue filled with synovial fluid. In extreme cases, corrective surgery may be required.
