MODEL RELEASED. AIDS baby. Four month old HIV positive baby during long-term preventative drug treatment due to the mother having tuberculosis (TB). AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a contagious disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It causes weakening of the immune system, making opportunistic infections more likely and making normally harmless infections life threatening. It can be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy. This baby later developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a serious skin disorder that arises as a reaction to some drugs (such as the isoniazid and thiacetazone being taken by this baby).
