Parathyroid gland tumour. Gross specimen of an adenoma (large swelling, lower left) growing on the parathyroid gland. An adenoma is a tumour of glandular tissue or glandular appearance. The two parathyroid glands are found next to the thyroid gland, which is itself wrapped around the windpipe (trachea) in the neck, near the larynx (voicebox). The tube running from bottom is the trachea. The parathyroid glands secrete hormones that regulate the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. Symptoms of parathyroid disorders include elevated levels of calcium in the blood, and bone disorders. The usual treatment is surgical removal of the tumour.
