False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a no. of virions (virus particles) of cytomegalovirus; the viruses appear as small purple spheres in image, with the lipoprotein envelopes surrounding the protein capsids (containing DNA) appearing pink. Cytomegalovirus, a member of the herpesvirus group, causes a condition among newborns called cytomegalic disease, characterized by jaundice & an enlarged liver & spleen. It is transmitted to the infant by the mother either while in womb or during birth. The virus earned its name cytomegalo, meaning large cell, from the swollen appearance of an infected cell.
