A drawing of a 'solar microscope' made by W. and S. Jones. This was an 18th century brass instrument for projecting an enlarged image of a small object onto a wall for general amusement. The device was fixed to a shutter in the window of the room, with the mirror (left) outside catching the sunlight. These microscopes were mostly used for entertainment.
