An artwork can emphasise general anatomical features that are not clearly seen when dissecting a cadaver (dead body) or carrying out an operation. A long tradition of modern anatomical illustration dates back to 1543 when Vesalius published De Humani Corporis Fabrica based on his work in Italy.
