Richardson (bearded, at lower right), is performing one of Gray's experiments, demonstrating electrical attraction between a charged glass rod and a soap bubble. Gray discovered that electrical charge could be transferred between objects. His experiment sending an electrical communication, or telegraph, over a distance of 198 metres, performed at Faversham, England in 1729, is illustrated at upper centre.
