C. D. Walcott. Portrait of C. D. Walcott (1850- 1927), American palaeontologist. Walcott is famous for his discovery of fossils in the Burgess Shale, a formation which has since proved to be a prolific source of fossilised creatures. He was a devoted Darwinist, and argued that the fossils of dinosaurs and other creatures that he found represented discarded evolutionary designs.
