Prof. Carlo Rubbia (born 1934), Italian physicist, Nobel laureate, & director-general of CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. Rubbia won the 1984 Nobel prize for physics for his role in the 1983 discovery at CERN of the W & Z particles, the mediators of the weak nuclear force. Rubbia became director-general of CERN in January 1989, a few months before the start-up of the giant LEP collider, which accelerates electrons & positrons in a circular tunnel 100m underground & 27km in circumference. This portrait was made in April 1989 & shows Rubbia in front of one of the spherical, copper RF cavities that accelerate the particles in the LEP machine.
