Frederick Quin (1799-1878), British homeopath. Quin can be credited with the introduction of homeopathy to Britain. After finishing his medical degree at Edinburgh University in 1820, he was appointed physician to Prince (later King) Leopold of Belgium. On his travels with the prince he became acquainted with homeopathy and, on his return to Britain, used his position in society to advocate it. Homeopathic medicine is based upon the belief that a substance which, when ingested, produces similar symptoms to a disease will, in infinitesimal dilutions, cure that disease. Despite an ambiguous scientific basis, homeopathy is a popular and harmless treatment.
