Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), Italian anatomist. Morgagni graduated in medicine and philosophy from the University of Bologna. At the age of 20 he left Bologna for Padua, where he spent most of his life as Professor of Anatomy. His principal research interest was morbid anatomy, the study of diseased organs. He described 640 post-mortems and related his pathological findings to clinical records of the patient's symptoms. In this way, he revolutionised clinical medicine by allowing doctors to recognise abnormalities of the organs from symptoms. He published his greatest work De Sedibus et Causis Morborum per Anatomen Indagatis at the age of 80.
