'Alison Lapper Pregnant' by Marc Quinn. Sculpture of the British artist Alison Lapper (b. 1965) on top of the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, UK. Alison was born with no arms and shortened legs as the result of a congenital condition called phocomelia. After a difficult upbringing in a care home for disabled children, she went on to study art in Brighton. She was awarded an MBE in 2003 for services to art. The sculpture is carved from marble and depicts Alison at eight and a half months pregnant. The sculpture was placed on the plinth in August 2005.
