David Livingstone. Engraving of David Livingstone (1813-1873), Scottish explorer, with native Afri- cans during an expedition. Livingstone (sitting on the cow) is suffering from fever as he travels to Chief Shinte's town. Livingstone had trained as a physician and missionary. During 1841-73 he mapped much of the interior of Africa, wrote accounts of native peoples & campaigned against slavery on the continent. His evaluation of the commercial worth of the region also helped to encourage European colonisation. He was the first European to see the Zambezi River (1851) & the Victoria Falls (1855). From 1871 Livingstone tried to find the source of the Nile but fell ill and died in Chitambo, Zaire.
