Mathieu Lansberg. Illustration of Mathieu Lansberg, Belgian astrologer, mathematician and alchemist. He is shown using an Earth-centred (Ptolemaic) model of the Universe to assess the position of various heavenly bodies. Around him is alchemical equipment and documents covered in unusual alchemical and astrological symbols. Lansberg lived in Liege, Belgium, and rose to fame in his youth because of his mathematical abilities. His astrological predictions brought him further fame and wealth. One of his teachings was: He who works on Sunday and makes merry on Monday loses his health, bread and credit". Image by Metz in 1840."
