Irene Joliot-Curie. Portrait of the French nuclear physicist and Nobel Laureate, Irene Joliot-Curie (1897-1956), measuring the radioactivity of a sample in the Radium Institute in the 1930s. Irene was the daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie and from 1918 assisted her mother at the Institute of Radium in Paris, France. She met Jean-Frederic Joliot at the Institute and they married in 1926. Working as a scientific team on radioactivity they both assumed the name of Joliot-Curie. In 1934, they discovered artificial radioactivity" in a phosphorus isotope, and won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1935. Irene served in the French cabinet & on the French Atomic Energy Commission."
