Dmitri Ivanovsky (1864-1920), Russian botanist. In 1892 he discovered that sap from the leaves of tobacco plants with mosaic disease was still infectious after it was filtered through porcelain to remove bacteria. He concluded that a filterable noxious or infectious substance was responsible. The tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) was finally isolated in 1936.
