Captain John Hunter (1737-1821), British Naval Officer and colonial administrator. Hunter was Captain of HMS Sirius, one of the ships of the First Fleet, which landed in Sydney Cove, New South Wales, Australia in 1788 and established the first European colony. Hunter captained Sirius on an expedition along the Parramatta River and on a supplies run to the Cape of Good Hope. Sirius was wrecked on the return leg of the supplies run and Hunter returned to England in 1792, seeing service in the war against France. Hunter returned to Australia in 1795 after being appointed Governor of New South Wales in 1793, a post he held until 1799. Hunter died in England. From a book of 1793.
