Hippocrates. Engraving of Classical Greek marble bust of the philosopher and physician Hippocrates (c.460-c.370 BC), also known as the Father of Med- icine. Hippocrates was born and lived on the Greek island of Kos during the Golden Age" of Classical Greece. His approach to medicine was rational, scientific, and clearly separated from religion. Hippocratic ideas included cleanliness, moderation in eating and drinking, and letting nature take its course. His code of ethical conduct forms the basis of the modern-day Hippocratic oath taken by doctors. Hippocrates is also remembered for his discovery of the painkilling drug aspirin, which he found in willow tree bark."
