Patrick Gill, British physicist. Professor Gill looking through the magnetic coils that surround the National Physical Laboratory's (NPL), UK, strontium ion trap. In 2004, Professor Gill's team announced that their experiments with this ion trap could redefine the second and produce a clock up to 1000 times more accurate than the best clocks of today. Professor Gill has worked at the NPL since 1975, where he is a science leader in the Fundamental and Wavelength Standards Team. As well as being a Senior NPL Fellow, Professor Gill is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a member of the EPSRC Physics College and is Visiting Professor at Imperial College London.
