Davies Gilbert (1767-1839), English politician. In parliament he prosecuted the cause of science and art, notably against Charles Babbage's application for a grant for his difference engine (calculating machine). Gilbert was also president of the Royal Society and a noted mathematician. He nominated and commissioned authors for the Bridgewater Treatises, in which eminent scientists of the day tried to reconcile science with the creation.
