Arnold Guyot. Portrait of Arnold Henry Guyot (1807-84), Swiss-born American geographer, teacher and glacier expert. After receiving his education in Switzerland, Guyot moved to Germany with the intention of becoming a priest. Instead, he grew interested in geography and obtained a PhD at Berlin University in 1835. By 1838 he was measuring glacier movements in the Alps, but emigrated to the United States in 1848. He introduced the teaching of scientific geography to his adopted country and by 1854 was a professor of geology at Princeton University. The flat-topped seamounts found by H.H. Hess using submarine echosound are named guyots in his honour.
