The English physiologist and pharmacologist, Sir Henry Dale, 1875-1968. Dale was educated in Cambridge, London and Frankfurt. At the Wellcome Laboratories in 1904 he began to study the physio- logical action of ergot (a potent extract from a fungal infection of rye). This led to work on histamine, a compound released by injured cells or in reaction to foreign protein, and an under- standing of allergy and anaphylactic shock. Dale also discovered acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, which led to research on the nature of chemical transmission of nerve impulses. For this Dale shared the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology with Loewi in 1936. He was knighted in 1932.
