Gerty Cori (nee Radnitz, 1896-1957), American biochemist and Nobel laureate. Cori was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where she studied medicine at the German University. She graduated in 1920 and that same year married fellow student Carl Cori. In 1922 they emigrated to America, becoming citizens in 1928. The Coris worked together at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, New York, on the metabolism of carbohydrate in animals. The couple discovered how starch (glycogen), a form of sugar, was released from storage in the liver (glycogenolysis) and created energy (glycolysis). In 1947 Carl and Gerty were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for this work.
