S. Chandrasekhar. Portrait of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, American astrophysicist (1910- 1995). Born in India, he moved to study at Cambridge University, England. In 1936, he went to work at Chicago University's Yerkes observatory. His main work showed how the fate of a star is directly related to its mass. He showed that low- mass stars collapse in on themselves after their fuel has run out, forming white dwarfs". These are small, very dense stars. If the mass of the star exceeds around 1.4 Sun masses (the Chandrasekhar limit), the star will collapse further to form a super-dense neutron star. He won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work."
