Australia explorers in a stained glass window in a church. This commemorates Matthew Flinders (1774- 1814, centre), English naval officer and explorer. He was born in Donington, and captained the first ship to circumnavigate Australia (1803). He also discovered the Bass Strait between Australia and Tasmania. George Bass (1771-1812), the English doctor and explorer after whom the strait was named, is at right. Sir Joseph Banks (1744-1820, left), English botanist and coloniser of Australia, was knighted for his work, and became president of the Royal Society from 1778 until his death. Photographed in Donington, England.
