Two pieces of bloodstained cloth and a vaginal swab from which a DNA fingerprint was obtained in the investigation of a rape case. DNA taken from such samples can be used to produce a pattern of DNA bands - the DNA fingerprint - that is unique to an individual. If a suspect's DNA fingerprint, obtained from his blood sample, matches the DNA fingerprint obtained from a bloodstain at the scene of a rape, or from the semen found on a vaginal swab, his connection with the victim is proved beyond doubt. humans is one of the major applications of the DNA fingerprinting technique discovered in 1984 by Prof. Alec Jeffreys of Leicester University.
