Kevlar fibres woven into material. Kevlar was discovered in 1965 by a chemist looking for new polymer molecules. Kevlar is an aramid compound that can be spun into threads that are five times stronger than steel. It is used to make many products including boat hulls, ropes and parts of spacecraft, but is best known as the material used in bulletproof vests.
