Nylon stocking fibres. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the weave of a nylon stocking (ladies tights). The fibres in these stockings are seen semi-stretched. Nylon is a polyamide substance, and the first synthetic fibre ever to be produced. Nylon fibres are stronger and more elastic than silk and are relatively insensitive to moisture and mildew. Nylon is used in the manufacture of textiles (particularly hosiery and woven goods, including carpets), moulded articles and medical sutures. Magnification: x50 at 6x6cm size.
