Cranberries. The red acid fruit of the cranberry plant, Vaccinium oxycoccus, is globular or pear- shaped, ripening in August and September. It becomes edible only after exposure to frost, and is used to make sauces and jellies. Vaccinium oxycoccus is a trailing evergreen, occurring in bogs and wet heaths in mountain and moorland areas of the Northern Temperate zone.
