Animal cell. Computer graphic of a typical animal cell and its contents (organelles). The big round structure is the nucleus, which carries the cell's genes in the form of DNA. The oval yellow bodies are mitochondria. These provide the cell with en- ergy by oxidising carbohydrates. The folded, dot- ted structures are rough endoplasmic reticulum: folds of membrane carrying minute protein-manufac- turing bodies (the dots) called ribosomes. The round bodies containing small particles are ves- icles (e.g. lysosomes and peroxysomes), some of which are expelling matter through the cell's out- er plasma membrane. The vesicles are made by the golgi apparatus (folded structure, lower left).
