Turtle identification tag. Researcher holding a microchip used to identify and trace turtles. This is a passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag. It is injected into a turtle's shoulder muscle and is less intrusive and prone to infections than tags that are stapled to a turtle's flipper. The tag is read by a hand-held scanner.
