Catkins on a swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor). Catkins consist of many tiny petal-less flowers clustered around an axial system. These release millions of pollen grains, which are carried on the wind to pollinate female flowers. The swamp white oak is native to Eastern and Mid-Western North America and is an important source of timber.
