Double-seeded fruit. Light micrograph of a cross- section through a fruit with two seeds. This is the fruit of an Alexanders plant (Smyrnium olusatrum). The fruit consists of two mericarps (left and right, five-sided shapes) joined by a commisure (centre) with a divided axis (carpophore) to which they are attached when they separate. The surface of the fruit is ridged and there are oil canals between each ridge, and two on the commissural surface. The section shows the inside of the fruit, which consists of food to nourish the germinating seeds, and the two seeds themselves (round) that each contain the +embryo of a new plant.
