Rubber vine seed pod. Close-up of an open seed pod of the rubber vine (Cryptostegia grandiflora). Inside are brown seeds with a tuft of hairs called a pappus. These hairs act as a parachute to catch the wind when the seeds are released from the pod. The seeds can be dispersed many kilometres on the wind. The seed pods occur in pairs on the ends of small stalks. The rubber vine is native to Madagascar but is also found in other countries, such as Australia and parts of southeast Asia.
