Daisy seeds. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two seeds of a daisy plant (family Asteraceae, formerly Compositae). The seeds (bottom) are known as cypselas. The cypsela contains the embryo (fertilized ovum), that will germinate into a new plant. Around the edge of each cypsela is a fringe of feathery hairs known as the pappus. The function of the pappus is to aid seed dispersal by providing an increased surface area to the wind.
