Pine pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) pollen grains. Each pollen grain consists of a base (coloured brown) with two air-filled, wing-like bladders (coloured green), which are extensions of the pollen grain's wall. These wings help the wind- dispersed pollen to float on air. The pollen is produced by male pine cones high in the tree, and may have to reach female cones a great distance away. Wind-dispersed pollen is made in massive quantities. Magnification: x2010 at 10x8 inch size.
