Oleander flower stamen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the base of a oleander flower (Nerium oleander) stamen. Stamen are a plant's male reproductive structures. They consist of a filament (seen here), which ends in a globular anther. The hairs are thought to be sensory hairs. The stamen produces and releases the male gametes (sex cells), pollen grains. The pollen grains fertilise ovaries, the female gametes. Magnification: x215 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
