Zinnia disc floret. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Zinnia sp. flower head disc floret. This floret (true flower) is found in the central (disc) region of the flower head. It is a self-contained reproductive structure, surrounded by leaf-like bracts (green). The anthers (yellow) are the male reproductive parts that produce the pollen. They are fused to form a cylinder around the pistil (brown, female reproductive structure). This will be raised to receive the pollen that will fertilise the plant. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size.
