Versicolour rose flower. The darker pink stripes on the petals of the versicolour rose (Rosa gallica) are known as irregular colour breaks. They occur as a result of unstable genes. The versicolour rose is a large shrub, growing up 2 metres high and 1 metre wide. Native to southern Europe, it has been grown in gardens since the sixteenth century. It is also known as the French rose.
