Dog rose hip. (5th of 5 images). Close-up of a dog rose hip (Rosa canina). The hip is the ripe fruit of the plant, and contains the seeds. It develops from the female parts of the flower after pollination. The remnants of the sepals (leaves which protect the flower) can be seen at the top of the hip. The hips can be used to make jams and preserves after the seeds have been removed. The dog rose is a common flower of hedges and scrubland, and flowers between June and July. See photos B760/347-351 for sequence of flower opening.
