Monilaria leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a leaf of a Monilaria pisiformis plant. The large white objects are giant water-storing cells. These are essential for the plant's survival in the arid environments in which it lives. Also seen on the leaf surface, or epidermis, are lip-like stomata, pores through which gaseous exchange occurs between the plant and the atmosphere. This succulent is native to South Africa.
