The cells are shown 12 hours after the plant was watered. The vacuoles (white) have grown as they have filled with water. Mesophyll cells produce sugar using sunlight (photosynthesis) in their large chloroplasts (dark grey). This plant, a type of primitive vascular plant known as a spike moss, grows in the desert. It is called the resurrection plant as it can remain brown and brittle until rain falls, when it becomes green and supple. Magnification: x11,900 at 7.5x9.5 inch size.
