False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a young leaf of a marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa (family: Moraceae). The leaf surface is covered with two types of specialised outgrowths designed to reduce the plant's palatability to animals. The pointed protuberances are cystoliths containing tough crystals of the mineral calcium carbonate. The rounded structures are glandular trichomes containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) resin. This resin is the source of the euphoriant drug known in its different forms as marijuana, cannabis or hashish. Magnification: x115 at 35mm size. Dark green tint. Ref: MICROCOSMOS, fig. 4.14, p. 74
