Leaf starch test on leaves that have been kept in the dark (right) and exposed to light (left). This test uses iodine, which gives a dark blue colour in the presence of starch. Starch is a carbohydrate produced in leaves by photosynthesis. To perform the test, the leaves were boiled in alcohol to remove the green pigment chlorophyll, then had an iodine solution applied.
