Regenerated shoots on the burnt stem of a golden wattle, Acacia pycnantha, from Australia. Many Australian plants are adapted to survive bushfires; this photograph was taken just six months after the surrounding woodland burnt down. These 'leaves' are not in fact true leaves but flattened leaf stalks (petioles) called phyllodes. This is a common Australian leaf modification, designed to conserve water in the arid climate.
