Quinine plant. Historical artwork of the flowers of a quinine plant from the West Indies. Quinine is obtained from plants of the genus Cinchona, and used to treat malaria. This use of Cinchona plants spread from South America in 1633, and the plants were grown elsewhere. The West Indies was once a major source for quinine supplies. This engraving was published in Flore des Antilles (1821, Flowers of the West Indies) by Th. Descourtiz.
