Meadow saffron. Historical artwork of parts of the meadow saffron or autumn crocus plant (Colchicum autumnale). This small poisonous herb grows from a root called a corm (bulb, lower left), sprouting 2-3 leaves (centre) and its flowers (top left). The fruit capsule (centre right) is shown containing seeds which, along with the corm, can be used to prepare herbal remedies. Preparations can be used as an emetic (to induce vomiting). From The Instructive Picture Book or Lessons from the Vegetable World, Charlotte Mary Yonge, 1857.
