California poppy. California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) flower, used in herbal medicine. When taken internally this poppy is believed to relieve muscle spasms, pain and coughing. The poppy is dried, then prepared as a tincture (spirit solution) or infusion. The sap has a mildly narcotic effect and can be used as a sedative.
